For this remote Arizona desert property, our clients envisioned more than just a getaway; they sought a sanctuary for deep connection and quiet solitude, designed explicitly as a symbolic beacon in the night.
The architecture responds directly to this desire for retreat, utilizing massive, rugged stone walls that ground the structure firmly into the arid landscape while providing essential thermal mass and privacy. This grounding element contrasts sharply with the minimalist glass-and-wood volumes that rise above the stone, particularly the illuminated upper level.
At night, this glass box is designed to glow softly, transforming the home into a literal landmark, visible from afar against the dark desert sky and the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains—a welcoming guide for arriving family and friends.
Inside, the transition between shelter and the wild is entirely dissolved by vast expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass and warm, exposed wood-beamed ceilings. The interior living spaces offer uninterrupted views of the mountains and the serene courtyard pool, while a telescope stands ready in the corner to take full advantage of the phenomenal stargazing afforded by the remote, dark-sky location.
The programmatic layout reflects the dual needs of shared celebration and individual rest. We designed the main house to flow seamlessly from light-filled interior living areas, framed by floor-to-ceiling glass, directly onto expansive outdoor patios featuring an infinity pool and a sunken fire pit. To accommodate larger groups without sacrificing privacy, three separate guest cottages are integrated into the complex, allowing for shared daytime activities while providing independent space for quiet reflection.
This desert sanctuary is ultimately a design for disconnection: a place where the weight of daily life is left behind, and the quiet solitude of the desert inspires deep thought and renewal.
