Desert Rotunda Home at night: an illuminated radial timber crown over an outdoor kitchen, loungers and a fire pit by the pool

Desert Rotunda Home

The resulting design is a finely tuned balance of heavy and light, ancient stone and modern glass, perfectly suited for a life lived outdoors.

Set against the expansive Texas landscape, this intimate two-bedroom residence and its accompanying guest cottage prioritize the natural environment over unnecessary square footage. Because the owners prefer to spend the majority of their time living and entertaining outdoors, the architectural footprint remains deliberately compact, serving as a gateway to the surrounding terrain rather than a barrier against it.

The home is anchored firmly to the earth by substantial walls of native, rugged stone, providing a highly textural and grounded foundation. Rising above these heavy masonry elements is the defining feature of the design: a distinctive rotunda topped with a striking radial crown of heavy timbers. Intended to weather naturally under the sun, this timber crown—along with the exposed wooden trellises that shade the exterior walkways—will gracefully age to a worn, silver-grey. This organic, evolving patina was chosen specifically to provide a warm, earthy contrast to the home’s sleek, modern glazing.

Expansive, grid-paned glass walls wrap around the living spaces, effectively dissolving the visual boundaries between the polished concrete interiors and the rugged exterior. From the primary living areas, the corner glazing offers uninterrupted views out to the sun-drenched flagstone patio, where a built-in fire pit and lush, native agave landscaping create an inviting gathering space. The entire compound is organized around this central courtyard, utilizing a sleek swimming pool to link the main residence with the guest cottage, encouraging a shared, open-air lifestyle.

As evening sets in, the architecture transforms; concealed lighting warmly illuminates the structural timber crowns and casts a soft reflection across the pool’s surface, while the expansive glass reveals the inviting, minimalist interior spaces within. The resulting design is a finely tuned balance of heavy and light, ancient stone and modern glass, perfectly suited for a life lived outdoors.
