Conceived as a conceptual study in extreme sustainability, this Hawaiian residence is a showcase for off-the-grid living and maximum energy efficiency. The design utilizes every available strategy to minimize its environmental footprint, relying entirely on locally sourced materials and both passive and active solar energy systems, along with rainwater harvesting.
A key aspect of this sustainable approach is the home’s earth-sheltered design. Rather than erecting a towering structure that dominates the site, the architecture utilizes sweeping, grass-covered concrete forms that literally emerge from the terrain. This allows the home to blend seamlessly into the lush, rolling landscape, avoiding a disruptive silhouette while utilizing the earth itself for crucial thermal regulation.
Deep concrete overhangs shade the expansive glass walls, protecting the interior from the harsh tropical sun while framing vibrant views of the jungle and the ocean beyond. The open architecture and strategically positioned glass facades are specifically designed to capture the island’s trade winds, allowing natural breezes to pass freely through the home. This constant, effortless cross-ventilation completely negates the need for air-conditioning in the mild climate.
To ensure the subterranean spaces remain bright and inviting, a massive, slatted wooden skylight is integrated into the living area, drawing natural light deep into the core of the home. At night, integrated lighting softly illuminates the curving concrete paths and the circular plunge pool, highlighting the elegant, organic geometry of a residence that truly lives in harmony with its environment.
