Arches House at dusk: a lit wood arch and steel tension rod above a stone wall, tall windows and a covered patio

Arches House

Nestled into the sun-drenched landscape of Southern California, this residence is an exploration of arched roofs, both inside and out. The home’s sweeping, gently curved rooflines are clad in a dark metal finish, creating a striking silhouette that shelters the expansive glass facades and open-air patios below. Framed by carefully curated, drought-tolerant succulent and agave gardens, the architecture feels instantly rooted in its arid environment.

At the core of the design is a commitment to honest materiality and structural expression, not to mention copious details. The exterior palette balances crisp stucco and rugged mortarless stone accents with the natural warmth of wood soffits. Inside, the arched motif continues seamlessly, defined by stunning wood-paneled ceilings—evoking the rich grain of Douglas fir—that draw the eye upward and outward through high clerestory windows. The structural forces at play are not hidden but celebrated; custom steel brackets and exposed tension rod assemblies elegantly span the arches, acting as both vital engineering components and compelling visual anchors.

As evening falls, the architecture transforms through precise illumination. Carefully placed fixtures, glowing in an inviting warm temperature range, highlight the robust steel columns and bathe the vaulted wood ceilings in a soft, ambient glow. This thoughtful lighting strategy accentuates the smooth transition from the intimate interior living spaces—anchored by a stone-clad fireplace and minimalist built-in seating—straight through to the exterior living areas and the striking glass-front garage. The result is a modern home that feels both grounded in its landscape and elevated by its sweeping, vaulted geometry.
